The Rev. Steve Hayward

The Rev. Steve Hayward

Our interim during the discernment/search process is a long time friend of St. Francis by the Sea, the Rev. Steve Hayward.  Since retiring from parish work he has lived full time in Brooksville and when he wasn’t serving somewhere else as a supply priest he worshiped at St. Francis.  He has also been very active in the life of St. Francis by the Sea including being one of the mainstays of our Holy Mowers contingent for a number of years.  Steve also filled in when our previous rector was on sabbatical and when she was dealing with health issues.  Among his parish experiences were stints at Emmanuel Church, Webster Groves, Missouri; Calvary Church, Columbia, Missouri; eight years as Rector of St. Peter’s Parish, Poolesville, Maryland; and as a certified Interim Rector he shepherded Ascension Parish, Gaithersburg and St. John’s Parish, Chevy Chase, Maryland.

The Vestry

The Vestry is a committee of nine parishioners. The group works closely with the Rector to manage the affairs of the parish.  They act as a board of directors, with the Rector as the chairperson. Members generally serve for three years. The Vestry has three main responsibilities:

1) Care of the parish finances

2) Care of buildings and grounds

3) Filling parish leadership positions

The Vestry is responsible, with the guidance from a search committee, to call a new rector if needed. They are also responsible for filling other positions in the parish, thus ensuring that appropriate programs, policies, duties and committees have been developed and are followed. The Senior Warden is often referred to as the Rector’s warden and the Junior Warden is referred to as the people’s warden.
